The
boyhood home of Ulysses S. Grant is located at 219 East Grant Ave. in Georgetown,
OH. The home was built by Grant's father, Jesse Grant in 1823. Additions
to the home were made in 1825 and 1828. The National Register property was restored
by Mr. and Mrs. John Ruthven in 1982. At that time, it was designated a National
Historic Landmark. It is now the property of the state of Ohio and is maintained
by the U.S. Grant Homestead Association.
The
school attended by Ulysses Grant at 508 S. Water St. was built in 1829.
The building was turned over to the Ohio Historical Society in 1941 and totally restored.
Civil War era gifts including books, replica toys, and t-shirts are sold at the school.
Both the boyhood home and schoolhouse are staffed
by volunteers from the U.S. Grant Homestead Association. They are open from
Memorial Day to Labor Day, Wednesday through Sunday from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. or
by appointment. During September and October they are open Saturday and Sunday
from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. or by appointment. A single admission fee of $3.00
for adults and $1.00 for children covers both the boyhood home and schoolhouse.
